Floofy cows
Sunday I remembered to take the camera with me on my evening walk down past the fluffy cows. So here are some more scottish highland delight for you.

First, all four miraculously lined up for a group photo. These are the first highlands I have ever seen with that much color variation. The standard is the blonde red.. I wonder if they are all purebred. The dark red one is rather large and somewhat less floofy at least. Second, is their field with the pond and bushes and loads of birdlife.

Soo, I have a question for the cow savvy. I tried to record the sound Scottie was making at me, but the wind drowned it out. She was SNORFing very loudly... and I couldn't help thinking this was the sort of sound bulls should make just before lowering their heads and scratching the sand to charge... but dunno if it's just a friendly checkin' ya out snorf.
Argh... the bum rubbing vid will be added later... it just takes too long to load right now for some reason... check back

I'd love to give them a scritchy-scritchy!

It's a friendly checking you out snorf, mos' likely. They are trying to take in more of your smell. If you stand very still, they may also give you a big lick to see what you taste like. Their tongues are very strong so you may end up with some of our extremeties or clothing in a cow mouth. Don't worry, they only have teeth on the bottom - an evolutionary trick to better grab and pull grass for munching. But they still can clomp on pretty hard.
If they feel threatened, they will become agitated - lowering and tossing their heads, extra tail swishing, big bellows, etc.
As with any large (or any) animal you don't know personally, stay a safe distance away if there isn't a barrier between you. And don't, don't, don't think they are safe to walk up and pet. Cows are docile, but as you said before, not all have been socialized. If you do come across a cow wandering around, let her know you are there and she will either not care or move on to get away from the annoying human.
These are SOOOO adorable! Thanks for sharing. Moos to you!
That said - I would totally stand by the fence and try to get a scritch in. But since they are fairly wild, I doubt they would let that happen.
WANT!
Awww, floofy highland cows! Yep, that's another one to add to my billion and one - make that billion and two - reasons I'd love to go to Scotland.
I am fascinated with them. I have stuffed ones and photos and things all over the house.
We got to meet an entire herd of them in Scotland.
They are THE BEST!!!
(originally they were mostly black -- only in the last 100 years or so has the light red become the standard)
All standing around in a bunch trying to look tough, looking out at you under all that long hair.
Just makes you want to skritch them.
Lovely beasties.
What yummy mocha-raspberry-frappuccino cows!
Do floofy cows make floofy burgers? I did not read all comments, so I don't know if this was mentioned.
These guys are too cute for burgers though...
Well, I guess the COWS got TIG'ed... I'll have to go and tell them tomorrow.
I LOVE these cows!
I knew Amy would know Cowtalk for ya! ;)
I'll be Scottie likes having someone scratch her butt so she doesn't have to!
Pension, HA! That is a funny thought...
Floofy burgers it may be then.
(you'll have to tell us if they all mysteriously disappear at the end of the year...)
Congrats on the TIG!
Presumably they sailed to Denmark, floof a'blowing in the sea breezes...
(they makes for extra-lean cheezburgers)
The cows are cool, but I would love to see the birds in the area!
