So first the Russians thought they'd claim the north pole for themselves... Outrageous!, right?
Canada and US are still flabbergastered thinking about how to respond, but don't worry...
Denmark - your unlikely action-hero - knows what to do. Our darling government instantly sent a ship full of scientists out to go claim our own bit! - scientifically of course!
Newspapers are full of promises of oil and minerals and whatnot...
Why don't we all have a good old fashioned war over the territory under the ice cap? huh? wouldn't that be fun?

It is a bit disturbing that we can now apparently plant flags under water... and claim sea-bed... I guess it had to be tried...
The whole "scientific" bit is what kills me... what sort of science is that?
Major oil and mineral extraction under the north pole will probably ruin the last of Inuit hunting and fishing.... but potentially provide some other jobs... for a while.

Somebody suggested on the BBC website that the Arctic should stay as UN territory and any money gained from mineral extraction should be used for environmental issues... either that or making it a huge international protected area.
The same kind of "science" that permits Japan and other nations to kill thousands of whales for "study"?
I was wondering when the Danes were going to make a move. I'm surprised the US hasn't said anything yet. Maybe because of the public frustration with the current situation in Iraq, the administration realizes that entering the pissing contest would be badly received as "diverting attention", or worse, another front to "defend". (Iraq was self-defence, you know - pre-emptive self-defence, but self-defence nonetheless...)
